2021 Martin D-28 Custom Authentic 1937, a superb recreation of one of Martin’s most celebrated designs. Built in the Custom Shop, this model gives players the sonic superiority of the Authentic Series paired with the everyday reliability of a true workhorse dreadnought. Regarded by many as the cornerstone of acoustic dreadnoughts, the D-28 set the benchmark for generations of instruments that followed, and this modern build carries that same DNA.
Construction is true to the pre-war recipe, with Adirondack spruce and rosewood back/sides, joined using hide glue and cloth strip reinforcement. The forward-shifted, scalloped X-bracing is cut from Adirondack spruce, giving the guitar remarkable projection and tonal depth. An adjustable truss rod has been subtly introduced, offering modern convenience and tweakability.
Spec-wise, it’s everything you’d hope for: a D-14 fret body with Adirondack spruce top, bold herringbone purfling, zig-zag back strip, and antique white binding. The long saddle 1930s-style belly bridge and ebony fingerboard bring authentic detail, matched with diamond & square long abalone inlays. The neck is genuine mahogany, carved to the chunky 1937 profile with a standard taper, 1 3/4" nut, and 2 1/4" width at the 12th fret. Waverly nickel open-back tuners with butterbean knobs, bone nut and saddle, and a tortoise-pattern guard complete the look.
Sonically, it’s every bit as inspiring as the spec suggests. Huge dynamic range, a commanding bass response, sweet trebles and incredible clarity make this a true player’s instrument. A modern guitar with vintage heart, the D-28 Custom Authentic 1937 is Martin’s finest nod to its own golden era.
